Description and Support

Acahela Geocaching Course

Newly revamped, the Geocaching Course represents the pinnacle of navigational skill development available at Camp Acahela and is the final leg of the Acahela Compass & Navigation Award.

Geocaching is a sport experiencing tremendous worldwide growth and uses GPS receivers to locate hidden caches at specific coordinates. But there's a catch - caches can be anything from a hidden ammo box, to a scenic overview, to a tiny container holding a slip of paper with a specific code number. The course not only gives the participants a taste of what kinds of caches can be found in the "real world", but also teaches a bit of history about how the sport developed while showing off some of Acahela's great spots. Participants return with a wide variety of "finds" in order to verify that they have indeed completed the course. It's both fun and challenging!
