Acahela Orienteering CoursesOrienteering is a challenging sport that involves solid compass skills with sound map reading skills. They key to both are the adjectives solid and sound - if you don't have them down pat, you can get tangled up in a heartbeat and our three levels of difficulty will drive that home. Participants are given a map of their area and a score card that they will have to note the code numbers from the targets as they find them. These random numbers will verify that the participants have actually found the targets (Leaders are provided a key with all the answers). The Beginner's Course is confined to the Lower Field. The Intermediate Course extends up to the old abandon Whitewater site and over to Trailwood before returning to the Lower Field. The Expert Course ranges all over camp and shows off some great places in Acahela. (To return to the Camp Acahela Compass & Navigation Award Main Page, click here). Support provided:Unit leaders will be provided with all the materials needed to do the course including leader's briefs that explains the activity so that you can answer any of your Scout's questions. Additional Camp Staff leadership can be provided if you feel additional help is needed. This is currently supported at Camp Acahela (and is under development at Goose Pond). We will provide GPS receivers, score sheets, and any other materials needed for this course. This activity can be completed in 2 to 4 hours, depending on the effort applied by the unit. Class size: No restrictions Advance notice needed: Two weeks is preferred. Cost to the unit is: $6.00 per participant Additional patches for the completed Compass & Navigation Award are available at a cost of $2.75 each and can be purchased at Camp Acahela or at the Scout Service Center's Scout Shop
